Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Ethnic profiling is a form of discrimination where individuals are targeted or treated differently based on their ethnic background. In Nigeria, ethnic profiling has been a source of tension, particularly in regions with diverse ethnic populations, such as Jos North LGA in Plateau State. Ethnic profiling can exacerbate security problems by deepening ethnic divisions, increasing mistrust among communities, and fostering violence. This study will explore how ethnic profiling affects security dynamics in Jos North, particularly regarding community safety, law enforcement practices, and the overall security situation.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
In Jos North, ethnic profiling has contributed to ethnic-based violence and insecurity, with certain ethnic groups being unfairly targeted by security agencies and local communities. This study seeks to investigate the effects of ethnic profiling on security in the region, examining how it affects community relations, law enforcement effectiveness, and the perception of security among different ethnic groups.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  • H₀: Ethnic profiling does not significantly affect security in Jos North LGA.

  • H₁: Ethnic profiling significantly affects security in Jos North LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study
The findings of this study will provide important insights into the negative effects of ethnic profiling on security and help in the development of policies aimed at promoting inclusive security practices. The study will also be valuable to security agencies, policymakers, and community leaders working to reduce ethnic-based violence and improve community relations in Jos North.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the effects of ethnic profiling on security within Jos North LGA, Plateau State. Limitations may include challenges in accessing sensitive data due to ethnic tensions and security concerns in certain areas.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Ethnic Profiling: The act of targeting individuals based on their ethnic identity, often leading to discrimination or biased treatment.
